Maida Silverman
A native New Yorker, Maida Silverman attended Pratt Institute, majoring in Graphic Arts and Illustration. Prinmaking was a major interest--etchings and woodcuts in particular. After graduation, she worked as Art Assistant to the Children's Book Art Director at Holt, Rinehart & Winston, and later, Special Projects Designer/Editor at Golden Books. She left to paint, illustrate and write freelance, specializing inChildren's Judaica. Her books have been published by Simon & Schuster, Golden Books, Putnam, and Grosset & Dunlap.
Her watercolors and drawings explore Judaica and the world of plants and nature. She is proud of her illustrations for a collection of the poetry of Chaim Nachman Bialik, published by the UAHC. Her special love is "A City Herbal--the lore, legend and usefulness of 34 plants that grow wild in cities," that she wrote ands illustrated from actual plants. Published in 1977 by Knopf, It has been in print for 35 years.
